#FollowFriday: California Apprenticeship Initiative

A great educational experience doesn’t always mean attending a conventional four-year college. It’s about whatever works for you: whether it’s working right after high school, going to a technical school, or attending community college.

Whatever choice you make, there are plenty of resources that could guide you along the way. Hosted by the Foundation for Community Colleges, the California Apprenticeship Initiative is there to encourage technical opportunities for community college students.

School is not all about being book smart. Rather, it should help prepare you for your future career. That’s what makes the California Apprenticeship Initiative so amazing. The program supports students and gives them opportunities to learn by doing. By gaining hands-on experience outside the classroom, students will be ready from day-one, compared to students who have done all their learning inside a classroom.

What does the California Apprenticeship Initiative do?

“The Foundation provides technical assistance to 37 projects and 20 sectors through coaching to increase student and employer engagement and fostering a shared community of practice for college supervisors of apprenticeship programs.

Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training (OJT) and related classroom instruction that takes place under the supervision of a journey-level craft person or trade professional, in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation.”

What’s the benefit of being an apprentice?

By being an apprentice to someone in the workforce, students will be able to think outside of the box. They’ll be forced to use what they already know to experiment and explore with what they’re given. This experience supplements learning inside the classroom because students are able to learn beyond what’s written in a textbook.
