How to Spend My Summer: Incoming High School Senior Edition

Finally, summer has arrived! The last thing you want to think about is school. I get it. Once upon a time, I was also a high school senior.

Getting started on the college application process does not have to be a difficult task, though. You can kick start this exciting journey, while still making the most out of your summer!

The Planning Process

  1. Which fields/disciplines interest me? What career options interest me? (Tip: they don’t always have to align!)

  2. What do I want from a college campus? (public vs. private, community vs. 4-year, in-state vs. out-of-state vs. international, etc.)

The Brainstorming Process

  1. What achievements are you proudest of? This could be academic, athletic, personal, etc.

  2. Can you identify any pivotal moments in your lifetime that allowed you to grow as a person?

  3. What makes you unique as a person? Can you think of any examples or moments that illustrate this?

The Fun Process

  1. Take a tour of local college campuses and sit in on info sessions. Even if you have no intention of applying, it may help you figure out what you like in a college.

  2. Check out the work of college organizations that are centered around your passions. It’s always fun to see what other artists/organizers are doing, and it may inspire you to do something (or go somewhere) similar.

As you can see, these are all relatively easy, low-stress ways to spend your summer. In the long run, you’ll be glad you had these extra months to mentally prepare yourself for the ride.

Good luck!
