4S Student Spotlight: Jason, West High School

Everyday, the 4S Education Foundation helps students reach their fullest potential. Through our one-on-one college mentorship program, high school students are paired with experienced and knowledgeable mentors who will take them step-by-step through the college application process.

Today, we’re featuring one of our 4S Scholars, Jason Agus, who shares with us how the 4S Education Foundation has made a difference in his academic career.

Q: How has the 4S Education Program helped you achieve your higher education goals?

A: 4S has impacted my life by drastically reducing the stress that college applications bring to the senior year load. I’ve seen firsthand the chaotic last-minute stress and fear from my fellow classmates: a friend who started college essays two weeks before the deadline; one who spent three hours at the peak of college app submissions; and another who had to pray that the deadline extension would work.

Q: Any advice you can share for students applying to college?

A: To those who will apply to college next year or in the near future, start early and submit early. And, I don’t mean looking up the top college rankings, but seriously spending some time to brainstorm what unique qualities to write about in your college essays.

Q: What course do you plan to study in college?

A: Beyond worrying about the ever-approaching deadlines, comes the million-dollar question: “What college major will you choose?” Even for my desired major of computer science, the ocean of specialties and job opportunities, are still vast for me. Yet time and time again, I hear from others and my 4S mentor: “Explore your interests in college; your major isn’t set in stone. It isn’t possible for a high schooler to commit fully to their major for the rest of their life.” My 4S mentor enhanced my perception of college beyond getting a degree and a job by trying different interests through campus clubs like archery, the quirky traditions of college culture, and networking.

Q: What impact do you hope to make with your academic career?

A: With my interest in creating helpful, quality-of-life tools, I aim to do just that -- making it easier for people to be efficient in life.
