From the beginning of high school, I knew I wanted to be a STEM major. English has always been hard for me. I knew that anything that included creative essay writing was going to be my downfall. That’s why when I first started applying for college applications, I knew that I was going to have an extremely hard time because not only was I writing creative essays, I was going to write one about myself. 

When I first started writing my college application essays, I didn’t know where to start. I’d write a line down and delete it. After sitting there for hours, I’d come up with a blank page. I couldn’t think about anything in my life that was worth having colleges read my applications for $70. That’s where my 4SED mentor came in. Even if I had nothing on my paper, my mentor would help me brainstorm and talk through events in my life that could possibly be the topic of my college application. When I finally decided what I wanted to do, my mentor would be there for me, helping me edit and toss in new ideas. Throughout the process, my mentor helped me improve my essays and be more confident about my writing compared to anything I could’ve written by myself.
