#FollowFriday: The Plus Me Project
The 4S Education Foundation spreads awareness about opportunities open for the youth, such as nonprofits and other organizations that we recommend.
For today’s #FollowFriday, we’re featuring, ThePlusMeProject, a nonprofit organization that empowers the voice and confidence in students through storytelling. They offer workshops, presentations, and other services for high school students and underserved communities.
Mission Statement: “PLUS ME Project activates the art of personal storytelling to increase confidence in youth as they pursue college, career & life goals.
The Plus Me Project was founded in 2013 and will celebrate its tenth year this year. Their values include building a community, authenticity, and inclusivity and that’s demonstrated through their interactive and reflective workshops and presentations. Even if one may not think that they have no story or that their story is not worth sharing at all, the program helps frame your mindset to envision experiences in your life to be important and meaningful, as they are. They also have a journal with lots of questions, prompts, and spaces for reflection that you can fill out and help you with building and structuring your story. Using time to deeply reflect on impactful moments, events, places, and people in your life is not only helpful on a personal level but could also help you write your personal statement.
Another wonderful opportunity they provide for high school students is scholarships, including the My Story Matters Scholarship. For this scholarship, you would write down your personal story including major elements of your story, including characters, settings, events, and lessons in your life.
As one of the 2020 scholarship recipients and a previous high school student who has participated in their workshops, I could truly say that I’ve learned a lot about myself and developed self-confidence in believing that my life contains major events, lessons, and impacts that helped me become the person I am today. I was able to embrace and acknowledge my struggles of my own mental health and see those who cared for and supported me. That being said, The Plus Me Project is definitely worth checking out (no biases here)!
