#MentorMondays: Julie Park
Happy #MentorMonday!
Mentors are the core of our organization. They dedicate time every week to personally meet with each of their mentees and guide them through the college process. This July, we started a weekly series called “#MentorMonday” to feature our dedicated and hardworking mentors.
For today’s #MentorMonday, we’re spotlighting Julie Park, a dedicated mentor and also the Executive Director of 4S!
Meet Julie!
Q: Where do you currently study?
A: I am a rising senior at Rice University studying Kinesiology and French Language and Literature.
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
A: When I want to be physically active, my go-to's are cycling (Beer Bike @Rice University) and yoga. I also love to travel! I just spent my junior year Spring semester studying in Paris, France, and traveling around Europe. Lastly, I am a big fan of 1940s-1980s rock’n’roll.
Q: What are some notable achievements:
A: A few things that come to mind are: serving as an on-campus Interpersonal Violence Student Liaison and as President of the Rice Sports Medicine student association and engineering the next generation of pointe shoes. I am also soon to be medical student and (most importantly!) I call my parents everyday.
Q: How did you get involve with 4S?
A: I got involved with 4S in 2018/2019 as a senior in high school! As I was finishing up my own college applications, Dr. Chase (CEO, 4S Education Foundation) recruited some of my colleagues and I to work on his new project. I had the privilege of mentoring students in our first cohort of 4S Scholars, picking up some executive duties along the way.
Q: What do you enjoy about being a mentor?
A: I can remember the first session I had with a mentee. I was inspired and completely stunned in amazement at the brilliance, curiosity, and ambition of the student sitting in front of me. In that first meeting, I learned about the joy of teaching (and learning from my students!) and I could not get enough. Now, as a fourth year mentor, nothing has changed. I’ve gotten to watch my students get into their dream schools (USC, Northwestern, Stanford, UChicago, and more), find their academic passions, and become increasingly amazing human beings who care for the world and its people. My students are why I love what I do.
Whether you are a current mentor, scholar, or are new to the 4S family, I always welcome a helping hand. If you are interested in joining our team in any capacity, please reach out to me at rebekahjulie.park@gmail.com.
