What’s in a Name? Origin of “4S”
Since 2018, the 4S Education Foundation has helped hundreds of students from all backgrounds improve their higher educational opportunities with one-on-one mentorship through the rigorous college application process.
This innovative program was developed by Dr. Phil Chase, Founder and CEO of the 4S Education Foundation. Dr. Chase is an accomplished decades-long educator, who has taught and mentored both high school as well as college students.
Having seen the benefits of his mentoring practices in the lives of students and their families, Dr. Chase founded the program in order to help make a difference in more communities.
Origin of the name “4S”
On July 22, 2017, Dr. Chase was in New York, visiting some acquaintances. Since several of his former students lived in the area, he met for dinner with four of them.
The occasion was truly inspirational.
One individual was Sung Lee, who had attended West Point, served in the military in Iraq for five years, earned a Harvard MBA, and was the CFO of a solar energy company. Another was Susie Kim, who overcame serious health challenges to become an expert on health technology and venture capital, and had become the Communications Director and VP of CRISPR Therapeutics.
Then, there was Sui (Joanna) Wong, who had studied Finance at Columbia and Chicago, and was a successful hedge fund manager. Last but certainly not the least was Susan Song, the principal lawyer for a noted firm who had defended the rights of women and children since her time at Princeton and Columbia Law.
After being inspired by their success stories, Dr. Chase combined their first initials and started the 4S Education Foundation program, designed to help many more students reach similar heights!
