4S Student Spotlight: Mery, Alhambra High School
Happy #InternationalWomensDay! Be sure to celebrate all the women around us in our daily lives!
Today we’ll be spotlighting one of our female students from this year’s cohort - Mery Phung from Alhambra High School!
Meet Mery!
How did you find out about the 4S Education Foundation?
I used to only think the colors on my canvas were black and white. It was average at best. College applications asking about my talents and my most challenging experiences stumped me because I could not recognize what made me who I am. I knew I was going to need help. I asked my friend and counselor what I should do.
They recommended the 4S Education Foundation to me. I have never heard of their mentorship program so I researched. After reading their mission and impact on students, I applied, and, to my surprise, got in!
How was your experience working with your 4s mentor?
My first ever meeting with my 4S mentor was terrifying. I had no idea what to expect. However, looking back I had no reason to be scared because she was so helpful. She organized my thoughts and college applications, making it easier for me to figure out what I wanted to do and write.
Every Friday, she would read through my drafts and edit them to make sure I had the best college essays I could have. My mentor took time out of her day to help me prepare for college admission through assistance with the application process.
This helped me realize the potential I had and the gifts I possessed. She gave the guidance I needed to see that perhaps my canvas wasn’t black and white, but a gradient of colors. Thank you, Katie, and the 4S Education Foundation!
