4S Mentor Spotlight: Julie Park, Rice University

Everyday, the mentors of the 4S Education Foundation guide, teach and support students to ensure their dreams of higher education are achieved.

Today, we’re featuring one of our 4S Mentors!

Meet one of our very first mentors, Julie Park! She is currently a third-year student at Rice University studying French Literature and Kinesiology, on a pre-med track.

How did you become involved with the 4S Education Foundation?

Before the day I had turned in all my college applications, I was proposed with the idea of becoming a mentor with 4S! I had been working with my very own mentor, Dr. Phil Chase (our 4S Founder and CEO), on my college essays for months. He would sit with me and patiently answer my every question, ever the educator, ever the hype man.

I was taken aback when he asked me to join his project, because the way I saw it, I was by no means the perfect college applicant; how could I ever be the perfect college mentor? I thought about the fact that just months prior I had no idea what it meant to be applying to college. My parents hadn't attended college in the U.S., so many of the terms had been foreign to us — FAFSA, supplements, PIQs,...

What made you want to join 4S?

I decided to join 4S to help students in the way my own mentors helped me. Through the thoughtful patience and encouragement of others, I was able to finish my college applications and matriculate into what has become the perfect college for me. This is what I always think about when returning to mentorship each year.

How do you help students as a 4S mentor?

As a mentor for the past three cycles of 4S Scholars, I have been able to support a total of 12 high school seniors as they began their journeys in higher education. I am a brainstorm helper, essay editor, and general mentor and friend for my students.

If you would like to be paired with a mentor for one-on-one guidance through the college application process, apply to the 4S Education Foundation for 2022-2023!

Our mentorship program is free and includes opportunities to earn scholarships and financial aid.
