4S Student Spotlight: Jacky, Cal Poly

The 4S Education Foundation is dedicated to providing one-on-one guidance to ambitious high school students as they prepare for college applications, essays, selection, financial planning and more.

Today, we’re featuring the 2021 4S Student of the Year, who shares about the 4S Education Foundation Program and how it’s helped him exceed his expectations.

Meet Jacky!

Jacky was a member of our 4S Scholars 2020-2021 cohort. He currently attends Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Q: What are you studying in college?

A: I am studying Aerospace engineering with a minor in Computer Science as both have always been my areas of academic interest.

Q: How did 4S impact your life?

A: Aside from the support I received from 4S throughout my college application process, I want to emphasize the personal support I received from my 4S mentor. Through only a short span of half a year, my mentor helped me realize that it was much more than a manifestation of the outcome, but an assessment of myself throughout the process. From challenging self-reflection to the exhausting workload of college applications, my mentor was there to support and assist me every step of the way, she helped me to challenge my honest truth and welcomed failures and imperfections.

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

A: I like to enjoy my free time outside of my room, no matter if it’s hanging out with friends or spending time by myself painting or swimming, anything relaxing that I get to do outside of my room is fun to me.

Q: What advice do you have for future students?

A: Many of you may be like me: immigrant, 1st gen, and low income. My advice for you is to not be afraid of reaching out for help because there are many opportunities that can potentially lead you to your personal goals. Accept the challenges with the mindset of knowing that you will succeed, and never value success through outcome, but the process.

Q: What extracurriculars are you part of?

A: I am a part of Cal Poly Engineering Ambassadors, Cal Poly Space System, Cal Poly Human Space Technology and Research, and CubeSat. Aside from academic clubs, I volunteer at Cal Poly Cat Program and help tutor students struggling with classes.

The 4S Education Foundation’s mission is to empower students, like Jacky, to find a path to success that not only makes an impact in their lives, but their communities as well. Make a donation today to improve higher educational opportunities for all students.
