10 Steps to Choosing the Right College

“Choosing a college is about more than the name on the diploma.”

Follow Katy Hopkins and Josh Moody, reporters for the U.S. News, as they break down what to consider when committing to a college in their article "10 Steps to Choosing the Right College."

Here’s a quick rundown if you’re between classes:

  1. Develop a short list. “Think about location, enrollment size, majors and programs, the people on campus, opportunities outside of the classroom, cost and selectivity.”

  2. Rank your priorities. Your wants and needs matter. Weigh what’s important to you and what is negotiable.

  3. Don’t procrastinate. “Experts suggest getting started on the application process by the start of your senior year in high school.”

  4. Go back to schools. Did you take college campus tours? It might be helpful to visit the schools again. You can even opt for virtual tours to save time and money.

  5. Focus on your endgame. Be realistic about your goals and finances.

  6. Delve into departments. Consider schools that are the best in your specific major.

  7. Investigate job connections. Check to see which schools offer the most resources for your chosen career field.

  8. Compare financial aid awards. Which schools offer generous financial aid packages?

  9. Compromise. You can’t control how the admissions process goes once you turn in your applications, so just make the best decisions for yourself and embrace the process.

  10. Move on from rejection. Don’t let a rejection letter discourage you from moving forward and finding the best school for your needs.
