Job Spotlight: College Resident Advisor (RA)

Ever wondered what dorm life is like? Do you have questions about how to bridge the transition to college life?

Today, we will be conducting a brief interview of a college Resident Advisor (RA). Sam is a Frosh dorm RA at Stanford University. He is currently a third-year undergraduate pre-med student.

Q: What is an initial challenge that students face when dorming, and what advice do you have for overcoming this challenge?

A: People struggle with finding a sense of community on campus. Diversify your friend group early. Make an effort to go to other dorms and dining halls to meet new people.

Q: If you could summarize dorm life in one sentence, what would it be?

A: It doesn’t have to be as hard as it is.

Q: Why did you choose to take on this position? What impact do you hope to make?

A: My freshman year RA was a constant presence in the dorm. He was someone who you could ask for help and advice, someone who understands you. As an RA, I wanted to emulate that.

Your resident advisor will be your point person throughout your time spent in dorms. Maybe you, too, will be inspired to take on this very important role one day.
