4S Book Recommendation for #NationalReadAcrossAmerica Day!

How do I find a topic for my personal statement? What kind of stories would others find interesting?

In high school, these were questions that I had when I was beginning my college application journey. I had no idea where to start — how could I make my personal statement personal without being too personal? It was hard to find a sweet spot among academically, professionally, and personally meaningful, and I remember control-shift-X-ing hundreds of ideas.

What I did find most helpful in writing college application essays were talking to people who had done it before and reading as many great examples as I could find.

So, for #NationalReadAcrossAmerica day, I recommend checking out "Telling the Real Story: 50 Authentic Personal Statements” - a compilation of personal essays written by high school students, who are now attending (or have graduated from) many of the most selective universities in the nation — including former and current 4S mentors and students!

For decades, Dr. Phil Chase, the Founder and CEO of the 4S Education Foundation (and long-time mentor and friend of mine), has been working with students in college application essay writing.

“Telling the Real Story” is a collection of 50 essays chosen from more than 1000 examples that have been created by students with whom Dr. Chase have worked on college admission.

It includes 13 examples of authentic Common Application essays, 18 personal statements covering all 8 of the UC questions, and numerous supplemental essays sent to a wide variety of schools as well as graduate school applications and scholarship essays. There are also 14 of Dr. Chase’s aphorisms that have proven useful to students over the years.
