Should I Take a Gap Year?

Hey students! Today, we’re addressing the following question from Quora: “Should I take a gap year during college?”

Now that senior year is nearing its end and college decisions are beginning to roll out, it’s time to begin thinking about whether a gap year is right for you.

What are some reasons students may opt to take a gap year?

  • Work/internship

  • Volunteer work for an organization/non-profit

  • Pursuit of a passion project

  • Travel

Keep in mind: there is no “right” way to spend a gap year. If you decide to take a year off, use this time to reflect and grow, whatever that means for you personally.

According to the Student Conservation Association

“98% said their year had helped them develop as a person, 96% found it increased their self-confidence, and 93% agreed that it had increased their communications skills.”

Consider what a gap year can do for your mental health and/or professional skills. Do you believe you are someone who would benefit from a temporary academic leave?
