Student Spotlight: Sarah Pangan

The 4Sed has a mentorship program where we have college students and other knowledgeable adults mentor selected high school seniors in the college application process. These include helping them make a college list, editing their supplementals and PIQs, and more! We have a new cohort of talented and wise seniors every year and we hope to introduce them through our student spotlights.

Today’s student spotlight is on Sarah Pangan, a senior at Downtown Magnets High School. She loves psychology and eventually wants to become a psychologist.  She states, “It's just something about knowing why we do what we do that continues to captivate me.” Sarah also likes to paint, write, dance, and is interested in ceramics. She also loves the color pink, treats poetry as her go-to, and also has “a never-ending love for turtles.”

According to Sarah, being part of the 4Sed Program has helped her learn about the college application process and the value of reflecting her true and authentic self.  “As a first gen student, 4s helped me navigate through the process of college apps in a manner that preserved my individuality, creativity, and the bits and pieces that emulated who I was while coinciding with the wants and needs of colleges. My mentor helped me nuance my work and gave me creative freedom to express my identity and didn’t breathe down my neck when it came to deadlines. I felt comfortable and I felt supported when it came to accommodating towards my loaded schedule and intentions with my essays. 4s helped me communicate to colleges the person that I am instead of being fixated on what colleges would want! if your college won’t accept you for the real you, that isn’t an environment you want to be in :)”

In the Fall, Sarah will attend Chapman University in Orange County, California. Congratulations Sarah - we’re so proud of you and we’re happy to have you in this program with us!
