More Important Than a Degree
One of the main questions students ask themselves when applying for college or even just thinking about attending college, is: “What am I going to major in?”
It’s not surprising this is a common concern. But, here’s something to consider that may be more important:
Here, Jeffrey J. Selingo, an award-winning journalist who has reported on higher education for more than two decades, explains that the subject we majored in in college means less in the real world than other skills and character traits.
He further elaborates:
Hiring managers complain that they often find today’s college graduates lacking in interpersonal skills, problem solving, effective written and oral communication skills, the ability to work in teams, and critical and analytical thinking. Employers say that future workplaces need degree holders who can come up with novel solutions to problems and better sort through information to filter out the most critical pieces.

This is a great reminder that soft skills, such as communication skills, being a team player, and critical thinking, are always something students can continue on learning no matter which major they decide to pursue.
